It’s only a month away and many people are already starting to book their tickets for what might just be the Grand Prix of the season. The Grand Prix of Great Britain, set for Matterley Basin on August 19 has a special place in the hearts of Motocross followers and the 2012 version is looking likely to see a lot of Motocross.

With MX1, MX2, MX3 and WMX World Championship races, European EMX 65cc, 85cc, 125cc and 250cc races, the veterans World Cup and the Amateur races, thousands and thousands of fans are expected to come to Matterley Basin to witness the MXGP Festival from the 16th to the 19th August.



Event promoter Steve Dixon is more than a little excited to see the form of the British riders at the moment and expects a huge crowd for the weekend.



“With Tommy riding so well and being in contention for the FIM World MX2 Championship and riders like Jake Nicholls, Max Anstie, Mel Pocock and Shaun Simpson all running consistent top ten places in their respective classes, a home victory is always possible.”



Searle is somebody who knows about winning his home race. Taking out the Grand Prix of Great Britain back in 2007 and finishing on the podium in 2008. Searle would love nothing more than win at the British GP.



“For sure winning in 2007 was a big moment for me,” Searle said. “I mean, the British fans are always 100% behind their riders and I have a good following in Great Britain. I’ve had good results at Donington Park and Mallory Park and I also rode well at Matterley Basin, so I’ve always had success at home.”



With a large crowd expected many improvements have been made on the Matterley Basin facility. Many fans still remember the 2006 Motocross of Nations when hundreds of thousands of fans arrived at the circuit and we had an atmosphere that was like nothing we had ever experienced. Dixon remembers that day well.



“Despite terrible weather on the weekend, the racing was really exciting and we have had that every time racing is held at Matterley. It’s a special place, a little old school with the circuit in the countryside, but it is also very much suited to today’s FIM World Championship styled events with good security, improved camping area and in general it’s just a much better model than we had in 2006.”



Mel Pocock who is leading the EMX250 series will be one of the big favorites when he arrives at Matterley Basin and you can expect huge support for the British youngster.



“I am on a bit of a roll at the moment winning the first three rounds of the EMX250 series,” Pocock said recently. “I can’t wait for Matterley, it’s going to really be a huge event for all the British riders and I want to be a big part of that.”



No matter what happens to the British riders on August 19 you can be sure that the spectators who turn up will be more than happy with what is expected to be a major event on the 2012 calendar.
